Graded Practical Exam

The ABRSM graded examination syllabus (Grade 1-8) includes scales and arpeggios, 3 pieces, sight-reading and aurals.  Having a firm grasp of these components are essential for an all-rounded pianist and musician.  However learning piano is not all about examinations.

One of my goals as a piano teacher is to prepare students to understand music and eventually to masterfully play the piano so that they can enjoy music for the rest of their lives. Music examination is just one domain of their musical learning.  It is my aim to strike a balance between following the ABRSM music examination syllabus, and to play with understandings the wide variety of music across different genres, as well as for students to be able to play the pieces they love.

Learning and understanding the objectives of specific grade are important. These contents are incorporated into my lesson syllabus. I also teach extra pieces from different genre of musical periods -- Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century, so that students have a wider understanding of the history of western music. I especially encourage the listening of the different interpretations of a range of pianists.

The followings are some of the books I teach from in additional to the exam pieces.
